## Scientific Computing Lecture Series

**Scientific Computing Program **of Institute of Applied Mathematics (IAM) has launched Lecture Series to share knowledge and expertise on computational science and engineering (CSE) with the undergraduate/graduate students. Over the past two decades, CSE has become an increasingly important part of research in academia, industry, and laboratories. Mathematics-based advanced computing is now a prevalent means of discovery and innovation in essentially all areas of science, engineering, technology, and society, and the CSE community is at the core of this transformation. The purpose of these lecture series is to bring together researchers from a diversity of subdisciplines from the fields of computational mathematics and engineering with undergraduate/graduate students.

**Schedule of 2019-2020 Fall Semester:**

**General Instructions:**- We suggest to bring personal laptop, installed already MATLAB, in order to implement Exercises. MATLAB Student Version is available to download on MathWorks website, http://www.mathworks.com, or METU FTP Severs (Licenced).
- You need to fill the register form to attend the classes up to
**October 13, 2019**. Registration is closed due to the capacity of the clasroom. Thanks for your interest. - Lecture series is just organized for the
**undergraduate students**. Please, do not send any e-mail for the attendance if you are a graduate student. - The lectures will be held on
**Cahit Arf Auditorium (M13), Department of Mathematics**. **Introduction to MATLAB Programming:**The aim of this seminar series is to provide an introduction to the MATLAB environment and language, in order to solve problems in science and engineering. The following topics will be covered- October 14: Hamdullah Yücel
- October 15: Mehmet Alp Üreten

This seminer series is organized for the participants, who do not know MATLAB or have basic knowledge.

Artificial neural networks are becoming a pervasive tool in a host of application fields. At the heart of this deep learning revolution are familiar concepts from applied and computational mathematics; notably, in calculus, approximation theory, optimization and linear algebra. This lecture provides a very brief introduction to the basic ideas that underlie deep learning from an applied mathematics perspective. We illustrate the ideas with a short MATLAB code that sets up and trains a network.**Introduction to Deep Learning for Applied Mathematicians with MATLAB:**- October 21, 17:45-19:30: Mustafa Kütük

**On 2018-2019 Spring Semester**, we organized a lecture series consisting of**Introduction to MATLAB Programming:**The aim of this seminar series is to provide an introduction to the MATLAB environment and language, in order to solve problems in science and engineering. The lectures were given by Hamdullah Yücel, M. Alp Üreten, and Süleyman Yıldız on February 25-28, 2019.**Numerical Methods for Differential Equations with MATLAB:**The aim of this lectures is to teach basic numerical techniques for solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs) or partial differential equations (PDEs) and to implement them with MATLAB. The lectures were given by Ömür Uğur and Hamdullah Yücel on March 09-10, 2019.**Programming of Finite Element Methods in MATLAB:**The aim of the lecture is to discuss how to implement the linear finite element method for solving the Poisson equation in one dimension. The lecture was given by Hamdullah Yücel on May 03, 2019.

The lecture series was succesffully done with over 100 participants.

- Our first concept is
**MATLAB**for undergraduate students. The goal of this seminar series is to provide an introduction to the MATLAB environment and language, in order to solve problems in science and engineering. The first lecture series was held first on**November 19-28, 2018**and then**December 10-19, 20018**with the attendance of 40 participants.
